Lucifer (Original Draft)

TEHUTI'S PER ON THE WEB NOTE: The original text of Lucifer, first novel in the D Is For Damien series. This is one of the three novels that actually reached completion, albeit in a much different form. Written in the same five-subject notebook as The Trench Rats--On Leave, Inspector Dobermann To The Core, "An Interview At LRU," D Is For Damien 2: The Night Of The Goat, "The Night Of The Goat Excerpts" 1-4, Sidekicks (original draft), "D Is For Damien Excerpt," Sidekicks 2: The Return Of Luther, "The Return Of Luther Excerpt," and "The Return Of Luther Blurb."

I recall that when I began what came to be known as the D Is For Damien series (named after its second installment), Lucifer, Damien's older brother, was to be the main character. For some reason, that changed, and Damien became the protagonist, and has dominated most of the stories (but for the Minot spinoffs) ever since. I still remember pretending scenes from this outside, sitting in a hollow in the woods beside my house and looking up at the sky while reciting, "Star light, star bright..." as the child characters were supposed to be doing at the start of this story. In fact, I suspect there might have been an earlier version of the beginning of this story which included that part--as I just noticed that this version doesn't--but I'm unsure of its existence or whereabouts. This story was started in a notebook two years after the seeds of the original story were sown, so perhaps this is in fact a second draft. In any case, it's the one which I got further through, and which ended up becoming the completed version you can find online today.

Take note of how events in the prologue have both changed and remained the same: Lucifer V and Lucifer VI have been replaced by Father Damien and Damien, and the crucifix has been replaced by the silver D. Likely 1991, but the original story was conceived (and possibly begun) in 1989.
