*Pawel's birth name is Paul, named after his adoptive father, Paul Wozniak. Wozniak almost always refers to him as Pawel, however, which he tells Karolin was the name his parents originally intended to give him, before they decided to return to Germany and live as Germans. After Wozniak's death, when Karolin moves to Poland and decides to present herself and her son as Polish, she renames him Pawel.
