He and his parents are all Polish nationals, though his parents live in Germany prior to his birth and again afterward, and are granted German citizenship. After the rise of the Nazi Party, his parents, who are Nazi sympathizers, concoct the story that they are actually of German descent, with the family name originally being Woschnagg; given how long they lived in Poland, they claim they "Polishized" the family name to fit in better with the local population. When his parents urge him to join the Waffen-SS, they bribe several higher-ups to overlook Wozniak's ancestry and alter his documents for membership. The result is that, while several officers in the SS are aware of his actual ancestry, most of his comrades are not, and believe that Woschnagg is the actual family name. *Although he's not based on or inspired by him, some of the details of his ancestry were inspired by Odilo Globocnik. Globocnik was a high-ranking SS official responsible for the ethnic cleansing of Poles, while he himself was of Slavic descent. Globocnik, like Wozniak's parents in my story, concocted a complicated explanation regarding how his family had a "Slavicized" surname yet were ethnically Aryan; Heinrich Himmler vouched for him. In my story, Wozniak frequently responds to others' comments about his odd surname with "It's a long story." (Ironically, when he has to explain to Karolin Bathelt, the only one to respond that she wants to hear the story, he realizes it's actually a pretty short story.) *I took his surname from a junior high school classmate of mine. The reason, I wanted a Polish name I actually knew how to spell and pronounce. More recently I had to search quite a bit to find a German "equivalent" of the name to fit into the story. I could find no exact equivalent, though Woschnagg was suggested on one website I can no longer locate. *[Coming soon.] Click to view/download various sizes (Flickr) ![]() ![]() |
