Appearance

Schulte is a Great Dane with cropped, upright ears and short fur. He's of tall height; with a stocky, slightly heavy, muscular body type; has blue eyes; and has blue-gray fur and blond hair.

Schulte has various small scars, including bullet scars to his torso and back from when he was shot protecting Lt. Gunter Hesse. He has a large Totenkopf (death's-head/skull-and-crossbones) tattoo on his chest. He wears the traditional black Allgemeine-SS uniform while in the office or at work and sometimes a gray SS uniform when in the field; he alternates between headwear, preferring the Stahlhelm, though he wears the peaked cap in the office and on some important occasions, as well as on visits to the Mesmer Club.

Trivia

*Schulte has many out-of-wedlock children by many different mothers (both single and married). He plays no part in raising any of them, though he does occasionally visit some, and provides financial support for all of them. He's very proud of all his children and likes to show off pictures. He criticizes Lt. Hesse for not doing the same; when Hesse asks why he doesn't settle down with a wife and start his own family, he replies that he hasn't found the right woman yet.

*Despite the above, he's never participated in Lebensborn; frankly it seems he doesn't need to.

*He expresses odd mixed feelings regarding the Unnamed Busboy's flirtatious behavior toward him; on the one hand, he finds it vulgar and disgusting, yet on the other, he feels rather flattered by the attention.

*Although he's never taken advantage of any women himself, he rebukes Hesse for leaving Sophie Sommer's room after she passes out drunk, insisting he should have followed through anyway as Sophie couldn't say no: "What's it matter if she's awake or not? It's not like she'll know the difference." Hesse replies, "I'm not f**king an unconscious woman, Schulte."

*He and Hesse may have a prototype in a pair of scrapped older characters of mine named Nightstalker (or just Stalker) and Deserta. Although they appear in no works of mine that I recall, these characters date to at least circa 1989-91 (roughly the time of the earliest existing written version of The Trench Rats, November 1990), as I remember a junior high science teacher of mine, Mr. Scott, loosely inspiring the goofy personality and voice of Deserta. Nightstalker, if I recall correctly, was a Doberman pinscher, while Deserta was a German shepherd; at least Nightstalker was to be depicted wearing a peaked cap and dark uniform, hinting at an SS affiliation, though this is unclear as I had not heard of the SS yet at the time. Nightstalker was the more serious of the two though he had a bit of a histrionic streak; Deserta was the rather dumb, bumbling sidekick. Both were inept as Nazis and were intended mainly as comic relief. For whatever reason, these characters were dropped along the way, and completely forgotten by the time I created Gunter Hesse, presumably for the 2002 reboot. Hesse was revamped as the smarter and more clever of the pair for the current reboot, and the newly created Schulte joined him as the rather dumb but hulking sidekick. Although the pair can be deadly serious, they also have an occasional comedic aspect, contrasting their vastly different personalities and morals (see the above regarding the drunken Sophie). I only belatedly realized the similarities between them and Nightstalker/Deserta, the main difference being what breed of dog the sidekick is (German shepherd versus Great Dane). I do believe there's an unconscious and unintentional correlation between the two pairs of characters.

*He's definitely not a sentimental sort; although he loves babies and children, he has no difficulty or qualms about shooting and killing a baby which survives the massacre of its family, whose patriarch is a resistance collaborator.
