Appearance
Papillon is of short height; with a petite, slender/androgynous body type; has bright amber/brown eyes; and has mousy gray-brown fur.
Papillon has very large upright ears which he often folds back/down when interacting with others; a snubby, upright nose; and visible fangs and claws (see below). He dresses in a cobbled-together "uniform" of faded but clean clothes, with special slits in the sides to accommodate his wings (these aren't highly visible, and are often mistaken for part of his outfit, until/unless he extends them); he usually goes barefoot so he can pick things up while flying or hang from trees. He carries binoculars as his eyesight isn't very good in the daytime; he sees better in the dimness, but still makes soft clicking sounds to help find his way. Due to all his fingers but his thumb being part of his wings, he wears specially constructed prosthetic hands with movable digits, attached to the tops of his wings via straps and held in place and operated by his thumbs; these are convincing enough to pass as real claw-tipped hands encased in fingerless gloves. Oddly, many of the people he comes in contact with have no idea he's a bat until he reveals his wings, hinting that rat/bat interactions are rare. He has a friendly, polite, charming demeanor.

Drake Rat (Lover)
Becomes acquainted with Papillon after Papillon rescues him from German soldiers, one of the two occasions on which he outs himself to the Trench Rats as a spy. Their relationship is very tentative at first as Drake is much more cautious and reserved than the emotionally demonstrative Papillon, but they grow very close, and Papillon is devastated when Drake is taken captive by the Nazis. He remains faithful during Drake's entire captivity, while Drake tries to hold on to his memories of him to get him through. Despite their vastly different personalities, they're devoted to each other.
Jean (Former Lover) (Deceased)
Papillon's deceased lover and reconnaissance partner; he appears only in backstory. Although he and Papillon were close, he was often rather dismissive of Papillon's feelings, and was rather sour tempered. Papillon broke protocol by hailing the nearby Trench Rats and revealing his presence after Jean was shot by a German sniper; Jean bled out despite Burgundy Rat's efforts to save him.
Unnamed Mentor (Deceased)
Older man who takes in the young Papillon after finding him living on the street. Despite their relationship being rather unusual, he never tries anything inappropriate; he acts as Papillon's father figure and mentor, teaching him survival skills and constructing his first set of prosthetic hands. He's likely mute, as he never speaks to Papillon or even reveals his name or any information about himself. When he dies, Papillon sets out on his own and joins Champere's forces. Papillon refers to him fondly, and it's clear he was a major influence in his life.
