7/7/23: r/SketchDaily theme, "Free Draw Friday." This week's character from my anthro WWII storyline is Jürgen Werner. He's the father of Senta and husband of Antje. He starts out relatively decent but basically goes bad guy by the end of the story. There'll be more about him later in my art Tumblr and Toyhou.se.

Regarding his design, he's a Dalmatian.

TUMBLR EDIT: I haven't much to say about Jürgen here that hasn't been covered already in the entries for his daughter Senta and especially his wife Antje. He's not a major character, so his background hasn't been developed yet, though this may change over time. Especially regarding why he makes such a strong shift from neutral to rabidly onboard with Nazi politics, that would be an interesting angle to explore. What exactly radicalized him so, and why? I'm afraid he hasn't helped me answer this question yet. Though his character is intentionally meant to convey how easy and commonplace it was for regular, average German citizens, otherwise normal people, to end up holding such horrid, destructive beliefs, often without many overt signs. Most Nazis were likely not the fanatical, over-the-top sort like Major Jäger, or "born bad" types like Lieutenant Colonel Dannecker, and I imagine many didn't have defining moments or motivations to become radicalized like Lieutenant Hesse. They were everyday folk, not monsters, and that's what makes them scary. They might not have ever forced anyone onto a train or into a camp, but they voted for it, or supported it, or otherwise allowed it and didn't lose sleep at night.

Please take note I'm not referring to all Germans in the Thirties and Forties. I'm sure plenty of them were decent people who were bothered by the regime but didn't have much power to change it. (I bet there were plenty, too, who were simply apathetic--"Not my problem"--which is its own particular issue I won't get into here, though you do see a few other of my characters who express this troublesome mindset--Antje rather falls into this category at first, in fact.) Just that thinking that every Nazi wore a uniform, or that none of the regular citizens had any idea what was going on--or even that every Nazi was necessarily a Nazi (looking at you, Private Helmstadt)--is an overly simple way to think. Jürgen's unsettling transition, and the effect such a change could've had on loved ones directly affected by it, is intended to illustrate this.

Aside from that, further details about his history will have to wait until he tells me, which is not yet. Perhaps should I complete this series of portraits and get working on the character profiles I'll have more time to brainstorm him.
