Dietmar Kammler Blog Entry |
March 18, 2022, 1:39:56 AM 3/18/22: r/SketchDaily theme, "Free Draw Friday." ...I did also a drawing for Free Draw Friday. This week's character portrait attempt from my weird anthro alternate WWII storyline is "Dr. C," more accurately known as Dr. Dietmar Kammler. (Yep, the Allies spelled his name wrong.) He's one of the main antagonists and is the Nazi doctor in charge of "Project Doomsday," an experiment intended to increase the subject's strength, intelligence, stamina, pain endurance, etc. The thing is, Dr. C depends on the SS for his funding, and unbeknownst to him, his SS brother-in-law, Capt. Otto Himmel, is secretly sabotaging the project out of revenge for Dr. C turning his son into a test subject. So much drama. He's supposed to have glasses, but given the character design they're rather unfeasible, so for now they've been turned into some sort of pince-nez. He also occasionally dresses in uniform, though this is relatively unusual and I haven't yet figured out what sort of headwear (if any) he'd have, or what his rank even is, if he has one. Usually, he just wears the stereotypical lab coat. There'll be more about him later in my art Tumblr and Toyhou.se. TUMBLR EDIT: Welp, I almost posted this without elaborating, though I feel rather cruddy today. I've mentioned Dr. C numerous times before in my other Trench Rats entries, given that the entire series revolves around Nazi experiments Project Weltuntergang (Doomsday) and then Project Ultima Thule. The backstory that's been developing is that Dr. C seems to be responsible for creating the former, then Josef Mengele picks up where it left off with Ultima Thule. The focus/end goal of the projects changes over time too, from attempting merely to increase the subject's strength, intelligence, etc., to aiming for a sort of immortality. (What form this immortality takes, I'll keep mum on for now. I will say, though, that my plot involves no cloning. In case you're wondering WTF I'm talking about... And this is actually the first time I've ever read a summary of the plot of that movie...hahahaha, there's a DOBERMAN PINSCHER BREEDER in it! Awesome.) Anyway. Dr. C, or Dr. Kammler as I guess he should more accurately be called, is dead by the time Ultima Thule gets underway, so he doesn't get to see the direction his beloved project takes. Dr. Kammler is evil, yes, but he's a genuine true believer in Nazi philosophy and thinks he's doing the world some good. So there's basically no reasoning with him. Although he appears to have sincerely loved his deceased sister (probably the only person he ever cared about), he tries to murder his own brother-in-law so he can turn his own (disabled) nephew into a test subject--that's how devoted he is to the Third Reich's cause. Every aspect of his existence is tied in to his project, and anything that threatens it threatens him, too. Contrast this with his brother-in-law, SS officer Otto Himmel, whose entire existence revolves around his son (Kammler's test subject), and you can see why their priorities are so different. Speaking of the SS, Kammler isn't one of them yet depends on them to fund his experiments, meaning he depends on Himmel--whom he tried to kill, and Himmel knows it--to keep him in their good graces. Kammler despises this situation but has no choice. He lives on eggshells wondering when funding may be cut and why the hell Himmel is helping him out in the first place, though he doesn't dare question it too much. Else he'd find out Himmel's just going along so he has ample opportunity to keep sabotaging Project Doomsday from the inside. WHY AREN'T ANY OF THESE SERUM MODIFICATIONS WORKING?!? I'd assumed that Kammler isn't military, but based on my own earlier summary I may have to amend this. I mentioned that he occasionally dresses in uniform for Nazi functions. Now, I've created this series with minimal understanding of how it all worked, which I mostly write off as artistic license...I mean, c'mon, these are talking rodents and dogs. I can get away with making stuff up. Still, I want SOME of it to remain at least somewhat true to reality otherwise I could've just made up my own fascist group. This is my longwinded way of saying, a brief look at Wikipedia informed me that if Kammler is going to be wearing a "Nazi uniform," then that most likely means he's in the military. Because for him it's not merely a political party with a brown shirt and an armband. I'm not 100% sure about all this, though--I can't quite figure out where Nazi politics and the military begin and end--so it's probably best for me to err on the side of caution and make Kammler a corporal or something. (I'm THEN left wondering, was there a minimum rank requirement for military Nazi doctors...? I don't know and am not sure how to find out. I might have to just take artistic license, because all I know is Kammler is low ranking, thus why he needs Himmel to mediate between him and the SS. He has an important project, but he's not important, himself. Oh yeah, I mentioned he's dead before Ultima Thule takes place. This was directly his own fault. When the newly founded Trench Rats rescued his test subject D-Day Rat, Kammler's Nazi guards captured PFC Teal in return. Teal becomes a Sonderhäftling, a special sort of prisoner of war who is supposed to be treated humanely...but we're talking about Dr. C here, he's definitely not humane, he's infuriated to lose his best test subject plus I'm pretty sure he's constantly amped up on meth. (Did you know the Nazis had a meth problem? Now you do.) Of course he turns poor Teal into his whipping boy, frequently torturing him and subjecting him to tests. Eventually he lets Teal wait on him like a devoted servant (Teal calls him Doctor-Father, like his test subjects). When Kammler and Himmel are captured and Teal and the other test subjects rescued, Teal is so broken by Kammler's conditioning that he reacts with grief to find "Doctor-Father" in captivity...until he's told that Project Doomsday is dead and done for, meaning he's not a test subject anymore. That's when he pulls out a shiv and savagely stabs Kammler to death right in front of Himmel and the other Rats. (Himmel, who spots the shiv first and tries to yell but can't (he can't speak above sort of a hoarse whisper/murmur), scrambles back in a panic--then laughs after the Rats declare Kammler dead.) So, Kammler's own creation ends up killing him. (Unfortunately, Teal is unable to overcome his guilt at getting Silver Rat captured and tortured previously, and ends up jamming a scalpel in his neck when Burgundy isn't looking...which fills Burgundy with guilt...and on and on the trauma cycle goes.) Well anyway...there's my evil Nazi doctor character. I need to start trying to draw some of my canine characters. :/ TUMBLR EDIT 3/29: Deceased sis now has a name--Dagmar--as well as an emerging history. Stay tuned.
