July 3, 2021, 1:38:43 PM 7/3/21: r/SketchDaily theme, "Squeeky [sic] Saturday." Posting late because I was just too tired to finish him earlier and my portraits aren't very good anyway. I went off theme because I missed Free Draw Friday! What's up with that?? Anyway, here is a character of mine named Mahakhi. Yes, he resembles the Egyptian god Set, because he's a member of a fictional race/species created by Set in my fiction, named the Apsiu. They're a warrior race with a strict caste system based on flight ability and gender: Females and wingless/flightless Apsiu, known as Moru--as well as winged/flying Apsiu, known as Kana, who have lost their ability to fly, whether through accident or intentional wing-maiming, a type of severe punishment--are slaves, while Kana are divided into numerous classes themselves, with soldiers being most highly regarded. Professional class and military rank are indicated by lappet color so lappets are almost as powerful a caste symbol as are wings, and to mar or even remove them in public is considered highly shameful. Additionally, lappets usually display more personal info about their wearer, such as lineage and tribe (in the form of Apsiu hieroglyphs, which I didn't include here since it'd be just scribbles, I can't make up language systems 😳 ). I mean tl;dr, these guys are SERIOUSLY serious about their caste system. They're also the subject of a very adult-themed serial of mine though I can't/won't go further into that for obvious reasons. Mahakhi's drawing here contains a spoiler in the color of the lappets he's wearing. He looks mean (TBH should look meaner) but he's actually one of the good guys. Anyway, I doubt any of this is of interest to anyone but me so I'll leave off there. I've put off drawing any of my Apsiu characters since I imagine they'll all look more alike (aside from fur color) than even my human characters, though I guess that's a risk I have to take if I ever want to draw them. :/ I have a. LOT. Of these characters. It's a long serial. EDIT: I. Forgot. To. Give. Him. Kohl. 😑 Before editing and reuploading yadda yadda, though, I decided to look at my own serial and find out, do Apsiu even wear kohl? In the entire lengthy (unfinished) series, I found only a handful of references. And almost every. Single. One refers to kohl as something the Apsiu seem to despise wearing except on special occasions, and even then it's a bother that they tend to deem as "prissy." I even found a scene where Mahakhi puts on some! He finally saw a shape approaching ahead and halted as soon as he recognized Mahakhi, and hastily placed his arm to his breast and bowed his head as low as he could without seeming sycophantic. The general almost ignored him until he was just about to pass him, and only then slowed to a stop, giving him a look as he fiddled with his pectoral. The fresh scent of perfume wafted from him and Resikh raised his head to see that he was fully dressed and had even had kohl drawn around his eyes. Resikh took pause. "Yes?" Mahakhi said after a moment of this, his ear twitching unpleasantly. Resikh flushed and ducked his head again. "Lord, I--I wish to apologize for my absence at the gate this morning; you see, I--" "You were not present?" Mahakhi asked, frowning slightly. Resikh peered up at him again and then shook his head. "No, Lord...I arrived too late to see to our arrival. I apologize profusely, and will accept any punishment you might see fit to--" "Ehh," Mahakhi said, waving dismissively. He fiddled with his pectoral again. "Damn things...I hate these things. I hate all of this stuff." He grimaced at his gleaming white kilt and glittering armor, and rubbed at one eye with some irritation. "Time was when we could simply wear a kilt and some sandals and be done with it! I do not understand the point of looking all glittery and prissy..." --The Ameni Chronicles, Part 42 So...there you have it?
