4/5/19: r/SketchDaily theme, "Free Draw Friday." Tonight, something different. A new, very very very rough sketch of Charmian, an original character from one of my fantasy serials. Yes, I can see the things I got quite wrong. Believe it or not, my older (paper) drawings are better. 😕 Meaning I've lost some skills. I tried learning to draw my characters years ago and practiced for a while, but eventually stopped out of frustration over my lack of improvement and inability to get them the way I wanted them to look.

I originally used an "anime"-style drawing tutorial I believe I found on DeviantArt. It was good, but limited; my characters all looked the same. Part of this is my great difficulty in differentiating the individual aspects (eyes, nose shape, etc.) of human faces; I would suck describing a suspect to the police. Part of it is not being able to visualize my characters clearly. (This particular character is a rare exception.) And part of it is lack of drawing skills. I don't want to draw utterly realistic people, but I don't want them to be hyper-cartoonish or anime-ish, either. Something more along the lines of Disney or Don Bluth would be nice. The thing is, those artists know how to make their different characters look unique...I don't.

This is all my way of saying, if you know any free, decent drawing tutorials online I could peruse to try to improve on my somewhat cartoony style (still images preferred over video if possible), especially ones that help you make your characters look different from each other, please point them out to me. Obviously I could use the help. 😊

7/16/19: Actually drew this yesterday but cropped it today. Not a r/SketchDaily contribution, just trying again to quickly doodle my character Charmian and not doing a good job. Meh. Try, try again.

7/16/19: 'Nother attempt at Charmian (and my first attempt at putting multiple pics in one post).

This time I tried a sketch layer and an "inked" layer, then both together (time stamp of this entry will be for that final, combined image). Not cropped, so they all maintain their proportions. This is better than the last one but, oddly, sketchy Charmian and two-layer Charmian somehow look better than "inked"/"finished" Charmian. 😕 And of course, she's still not quite right. And this isn't even taking coloring into account...

Meh, wish I was better at this. 😖 Try, try again.

7/19/19: r/SketchDaily theme, "Free Draw Friday/Introduce Yourself: What You Did This Week." What I'm doing is still trying to figure out how to draw my characters. Here's a frontal view of protagonist Charmian from my fantasy serials.

You can see an earlier r/SketchDaily attempt at her here. Hm, I notice I gave her a different shade of blue eyes. 🤔

7/28/19: Another rough sketch of Charmian using this newer method. (I draw her so often as she was the first human character I learned to draw with that old tutorial, and I can picture her general appearance pretty well, so she's my drawing guinea pig.)

Need to enlarge the back of the head BEFORE drawing hair, because no matter how much I keep trying to make her hair bigger, it doesn't compensate. Eventually I should learn this.

Goodnight. 😴

8/20/19: I don't know, I feel like I'm regressing rather than improving. 🙁 I had to delete two previous attempts...when I've almost NEVER had trouble drawing my character Charmian. She was the very first character I drew when trying to learn character drawing, in fact. Sigh.

She has no profile yet but you can read her first appearance in my writing, starting HERE.

9/23/19: r/SketchDaily theme, "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." Can think of absolutely nothing to draw for this, so am going off theme with yet another drawing of my fictional character Charmian since my last effort sucked so much.

3/12/21: Updated Charmian portrait! Was about time. Parts of it bug me but meh.
