6/3/21: Stay tuned!

[Rough Horus Sketches 2021 [Thursday, June 3, 2021, 7:42:45 PM]]

6/4/21: r/SketchDaily theme, "Free Draw Friday." There was an attempt...? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Here is the Egyptian god Horus. I can't say this is his definitive design, as he's gone through several attempts in past years (in childhood I just drew him as a huge hawk) and none have stuck, mostly due to my inferior art skills. This time around, I decided to use Google, as in, asking it what kind of hawk/falcon Horus most likely was. I always thought he resembled an American kestrel, though he couldn't have been that, for obvious reasons. So what was he?

Google informed me that the peregrine falcon was one good candidate, but I ruled it out due to its range and its facial markings. Horus has very distinctive feathers around his eye(s) and the peregrine photos I saw lacked those. Well, the other primary candidate Google suggested was something called a lanner falcon. Never heard of it, but looked it up. It's native to Africa--good start. And it has distinctive dark markings around its eyes--which strongly resemble the dropped feathers in the design of the Eye of Horus. Nice! I think I finally discovered exactly what sort of bird Horus may have been based on.

Anyway, you'll see in my design that he has ONE glowing blue eye. His other eye, barely visible here, is dark brown. No, my Horus does not have heterochromia. Though that would be cool. Rather, his uncle Set ripped out one of his eyes and when it was magically healed, it took on the glowing blue luster the Egyptian gods' eyes get when piqued (in my mythology) and permanently stayed that way. I just happened to luck out in that the angle I drew him at fully displays his left eye, which happens to be the eye which, in the myth, was torn out. Whew!

Horus is one of my more problematic characters in that, while I've written an entire novel about him, his personality and character development elude me; he just seems too goody-goody and dull, especially compared to more nuanced characters like his aforementioned uncle, and his half-brother Anubis. :/ I've been trying to work on making him more complex, but it's rather difficult, when at heart he's just a simple god who hates the palace politics of ruling over Kemet (Egypt) and would prefer to still be living in a hut and hunting waterfowl in the Delta swamps like he did in his childhood. Oh well.
