He's never been portrayed as a human, despite me successfully(?) humanizing all the characters of the Minot spinoff so far, likely because I never drew them as animal or human, period. (Except one weird experimental sketch of Det. Reichert, that I know of.) So I gave it a try. While it turned out as a decent sketch of a human...I'm not sure it accurately represents Damien. 😕 He looks far too close to my drawing/idea of Max Kristeva, though you can see some attempted differences, in the slightly longer hair/bangs, different eye color... Here's something funny I noticed, though. It's been a while since I've written about him (Dami is one of my holdover childhood characters), though I clearly recall describing his eye color, multiple times, as resembling sand on the bottom of a clear stream, which I guess is my poetic way of saying, light sandy gold/brown. As I went to color his hair, though, I found myself puzzled...what was his hair color? For the life of me, I couldn't recall. 🤔 At last I realized this was because, being an anthro character without human-style hair (some of them have it, some don't), Dami technically doesn't HAVE "hair" or a hair color, he has FUR. Anyway, I settled on light brown, saved it and went to bed...but the next night it just seemed wrong. I finally used this darker brown (and tweaked his eye color, to boot). Still darker than I envision him, but I chose the hair color as it's the color of the head of a wirehaired pointing griffon--the type of dog Dami and his family are. Missing is Dami's signature hat. In my old drawings, he always wears this odd baseball cap with a wider-than-usual brim, folded up...it fits his anthro form okay, but multiple mock attempts to sketch it on human Damien just looked incredibly goofy. Considering he was designed in the Nineties, maybe that's part of it. But maybe also that's why this doesn't look like Dami to me, with that goofy hat missing. I couldn't figure out how to draw it decently, so...no hat. 😕 Seeing as this is an experiment and I'm not sure how committed I am to it, I can't say this is Dami's "official" human form. I offer it as more of a curiosity than anything. Included (bottom) is the original alternate-color hair and eye version. I'll need sometime to try to draw Dami's original anthro form so you can compare them (I tried to make his hair and bangs longer to mimic the long fur on his ears, but that was about all I could do) and see how they look NOTHING remotely like each other. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ So...yep. There you go. [[Damien Evans 2021 WIP] [Tuesday, April 6, 2021, 12:06:56 AM]] [Damien Evans 2021 [Tuesday, April 6, 2021, 12:21:06 AM]] 4/17/21: r/SketchDaily theme, "Road Trip." Gone off theme today because first, I can't think of anything to draw for the theme, second, I missed Free Draw Friday(!), and third, I really wanted to redo this portrait. Recently in my blog I posted a portrait of my character Damien (Evans). Here's my redo. HERE is the original post where, as you can see, there are two color schemes. I chose darker-haired Damien as the color better matched the fur of a wirehaired pointing griffon...the kind of dog Damien's original design is. (Yep, he started out anthro back in the late Eighties/early Nineties. This is his first human design, and I'm not committed to it.) The plain truth is, as an anthro dog, Dami never HAD an official "hair color" since he had FUR. Light-haired Damien looked more suitable, though. 😕 Despite my mixed feelings, I made dark-haired Dami the "official" portrait but decided to also show off light-haired Dami, whose portrait thus went unfinished, for comparison. Welp...today while writing up Dami's profile for Toyhou.se, I went looking for an old profile I wrote years ago to confirm a fact. And in that profile, written up before I ever had thoughts of trying to draw a human Damien...Dami had a hair color listed, and it was LIGHT BROWN. 🤦♀️ So...already my new portrait was inaccurate. And it had already been all merged together and saved...so what could be done? Enter IbisPaint X. I've been doing all my art in that lately...except my character portraits, which I still do in Sony Sketch. IbisPaint has a nifty feature where, when you import certain images, it asks if you want to extract the line art or some such (I'm bad at technical terms, sorry). Turns out all I had to do was take Dami's finished Sony Sketch portrait (saved in PNG format), import it into IbisPaint, let it do its magic which extracted the line art and removed all the coloring, export it as a transparent PNG, then open up Sony Sketch and import the transparent PNG and voila!--fresh new line art to color in anew. And now here we are with an updated portrait. You can say I cheated somewhat in that technically, this wasn't drawn today, and you'd be right, but I did have to redo all the coloring and I just REALLY wanted to fix the hair. So I guess this is like Damien Portrait 2.0. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (And yeah I really need to learn the correct capitalization for IbisPaint.) [Damien Evans 2021 2 [Saturday, April 17, 2021, 9:16:16 PM]] |
