Chance Devetko, a main character of mine and thus somebody whose final sketch will be VERY important and subject to my bitterest disappointment at not doing him justice...in about 15 min. this came out...and...now I'm drooling over him. 😳 I was not expecting this, especially not within 15 measly minutes. I don't even drool over Dev in my daydreams. WTF. I will probably be gagging over him instead in the morning, and I really shouldn't post an unfinished piece I intend to finish later, but...I don't know, maybe it's my hormones. (He should really have a pissier facial expression, because well, he is nicknamed Detective Bitchface, after all.) He might not look like it but he could probably kick your ass. Too many people (*cough*Campion*coughcough*) have made the mistake of underestimating him and finding this out the hard way... You can see his profile, and some awesome art another user made of him, HERE. (Oddly, his personal history is pretty tame and vanilla compared to most of my other characters so far. I guess somebody needs to be normal. May as well be the gay guy who has a black belt in judo, collects jazz albums, and helps build houses in his spare time, yes? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ) ... ...I'm getting a callus on my knuckle from how I hold my tablet as I draw. 🤔 I haven't had a callus since I used to suck on my finger as a child. [Chance Devetko 2019 [Thursday, August 8, 2019, 7:13:41 PM]] 2/5/20: Random practice guy, inspired by Chance Devetko though I didn't look at his hair so I know I didn't get that right. So that's why I call him Random Practice Guy. I think he looks a tad better than I've been doing recently. When I soon get caught up at DeviantArt perhaps I'll have more time to practice this. Maybe do a better version of that monstrosity who looks nothing like Det. Reichert. 🤮 And now an update to THIS dusty entry... I'd been planning to post scans of my older (non-digital) art here, but I have multiple (very small, poor-quality) scans and crops of it all, and sorting it for upload is a pain, plus, back when I originally posted it on Writing.com and DeviantArt and Flickr, I never dated things properly. Now that I'm anal about dating my art, this chafes me. I accidentally found some of my Manitou Island art while working on trying to clean my room, so thought to go looking for my old rough sketches from my first attempts at trying to learn how to draw my human characters, around 2004-6. I finally located most of them in bins in my closet...and it turns out most are numbered and dated...and many sketches were never scanned and uploaded anywhere, probably because they're so rough and marked as "failures." (There's one particularly hilarious figure sketch of Charmian jumping in fright from a cheesy little snake I likely doodled in after the fact.) Also probably because back then I had unreliable dialup Internet (around 46kbps on a GOOD day...and most days weren't good), and uploading anything was just a pain. Plus there's non-story-related art from old sketchbooks. So much stuff that's never seen the light of the 'Net! Unfortunately...some of it is still missing, especially some more finished drawings of the Egyptian gods, and rough Trench Rats/random sketches. I suspect (hope) that's still lurking in my closet bins among my ancient writings and various other papers, and so plan to try giving it another look after clearing more junk away. (Those bins are heavy and hard to get at.) I currently don't have a scanner... 😕 ...and my skills photographing my art are subpar...so I'm not sure how I'll proceed once/if I find all my old art...but as Det. Kristeva would say, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it, or else watch somebody's dead body get tossed over the side, I guess. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ EDIT later that night: I think I finally found it all! At the very bottom of the big bin! 😃 [Rough Random Sketch 2020 [Wednesday, February 5, 2020, 2:17:43 PM]] 1/29/21: r/SketchDaily theme, "Free Draw Friday." Time for another attempted character update! Here's the newest version of Det. Chance Devetko, another of my Minot PD characters. He's Det. Max Kristeva's partner and while the two of them didn't work very well together at first (the too-serious-for-his-own-good Dev despised Kristeva's rather...quirky...investigative techniques, which tend to involve lots of Rock, Paper, Scissors and increasingly weird variants of Good Cop, Bad Cop--Dev actually ended up asking for a transfer but none were available), they've since adapted, and complement each other pretty well. THIS was intended as an earlier sketch of him but I got the hair wrong. And HERE is his previous portrait whose eyes have bugged the snot out of me ever since so even though his new portrait somewhat bothers me too, at least it doesn't have those weird eyes. I was a dummy! Don't do random throwaway sketchy-sketches in my art app, I told myself! Just don't! Because I'll need to back 'em up in all five formats and save the stats and yadda yadda for a little piece of trash art. Oh, I'll delete it afterward, I told myself. Welp no! Because even though my attempt at using an alternate portrait method I found on a defunct Tumblr art blog fell through, I liked how the like five-second sketch I did in my regular style turned out! Now how come they don't turn out like that when I spend TWO HOURS on them...?? 😡 (Just noticed though that I forgot the...midface line or whatever in my "good" drawing...erp...) And yeah, it's Devetko and he's as fed up as I am. [Sketchy Devetko Sketch 2021 [Wednesday, February 10, 2021, 12:33:02 AM]] 3/13/21: ...So...I sucked it up and tried out IbisPaint X again with the intent of actually finishing something. 😑 I may try to color it next...but am very skeptical of how it'll go. Right after Dev (yeah, messed up his hair again, deal with it) declared death to the quick eyedropper tool (I'm honestly amazed how quickly I caught on to what was happening every time I tried to slowly start drawing only to have my brush...turn into an eraser?--no--turn white??--WTF??), I exported and went back and back and back and...oh look, settings...YOU CAN TURN IT OFF! AND YOU CAN TURN OFF THE CANVAS ROTATING AS YOU ZOOM! CRIPES why can tutorials not tell you this??...Google just kept telling me to press two fingers on the screen...which does not work WHEN YOU USE A STYLUS. Am I the only person who draws with a stylus?? Anyway. The eraser is nice. Anybody who knows the app well, feel free to drop me a line so I can ask dumb questions now and then. I'm especially interested in how to replicate the glitter effect I use in my portraits (see Charmian, below)...I can't find ways to make brushes glow, or paint in a gradient (I know the gradient filter is a paid feature but what about in brushes...?). 🤔 Need to log off. Still rather bummed. I need to learn everything all over again just as I'd gotten the hang of it, which took OVER TWO YEARS. 😞 EDIT: IbisPaint X apparently automatically records a session each time you do a drawing.
