This story is loosely inspired by/based on Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy, which is of course public domain, though it was not meant to be a direct retelling. As well, certain characters in this storyline are based on real people, but are not intended to be accurate representations of said people.
STORYLINE HISTORY/INSPIRATION
This story stands out a bit as I'm not sure if I ever intended to make a series or an entire standalone storyline out of it; I have many one-shot stories I haven't dedicated character pages to for this reason, the characters weren't intended to recur. I remember putting some time and thought into this, though, so I'll grant it its own page.
I had read about The Divine Comedy in one of my Time-Life Mysteries Of The Unknown books. Ah, those books inspired so much. I seem to recall it was an illustrated section that detailed the various circles of Hell that Dante and Virgil traveled through. I glommed on to it as I tended to do, and came up with the goofy idea for an updated version featuring Danny Alighieri, Dante's descendant. Virgil was there, as a guardian angel. Dante himself was there too, also as an angel...just...kind of an undead one. I seem to remember his jaw falling off at one point. It was weird. I honestly don't remember how the entirety of this story was to go--was I seriously going to put Danny through Hell?--but it wasn't as dark as it sounds. Anyway.
I wrote two very lousy chapters of this story before moving on, probably focusing more on D Is For Damien or possibly The Trench Rats (both writings dating to 1990) instead.
